Tool Theory

About

We test AI tools so you don't have to

Tool Theory is an independent publication reviewing AI tools for makers, creators, and small business owners. Every tool gets tested with real work — we publish what we learn.

Why we exist

Most AI tool reviews read like affiliate link dumps — 10 tools, 10 affiliate links, zero actual testing. We take the opposite approach: deep, honest comparisons with real workflows and actual results. If a tool doesn't earn back its subscription cost, we'll tell you.

The AI tool landscape changes weekly. What worked in January is obsolete by March. We stay on top of it so you don't have to burn your evenings testing 15 different coding assistants.

How we make money

Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click through and purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This does not influence our recommendations — we only link to tools we've tested and would recommend regardless.

We also earn from display advertising and may offer sponsored placements (clearly marked). Our editorial integrity is not for sale. If a tool is bad, we say so.

Who runs this

Tool Theory is a one-person project. I'm a builder and tinkerer who spends too much time testing productivity tools and AI agents. This site is where I share what I learn.

I run several businesses on the side — an Etsy printable wall art shop, an AI automation consultancy, and a handful of SaaS experiments. The tools I review are the ones I use to run those businesses.
